The Insider's Guide to Instagram Reels
Chances are that you've heard of Reels on Instagram – they were released in August 2020 and are now a HUGE part of the platform. Reels are short, engaging multi-clip videos (15 to 30 seconds long) and as the creator, you can share your Reels to a bigger audience instantly. Discoverability to the Max!
Learn the basics of Instagram Reels and really connect with your followers.
Here's your simple tutorial on Reels.
Once you're in the Instagram app, tap on the Reels icon and tap on the camera (unless you have pre-recorded content to add, that will be in your phone gallery). You can either record your Reel in one long clip or in a series of clips.
Just tap the capture button (the Reel icon in the middle) to start and then again to stop recording.
Once you've recorded, tap the right arrow to edit. Much like Stories, you have so many fun tools at your fingertips. These include:
Audio (Music & Saved Sounds)
Effects (A.K.A Filters)
Timer & Countdown
Speed (Speed or Slow Motion)
From there, tap on “Share” and add your caption to REEL post and TADA!
Before we get to the “What do I post on Reels?”, let's talk about “Why should I post a Reel?” Facts: Reels generate more engagement than traditional Instagram videos now a days.
Notice how Reels appear in larger squares on the Explore tab, are suggested to users in their Feeds and have the center spot on your navigation bar?
Reels are a great way to engage with your own IG community as well as wider audiences and it boosts your discoverability by being both in the Explore/Reels gallery and your own Feed.

Take your audience behind the scenes. Shoot some footage of what goes on behind the camera and show your tribe what it's like to work with you: coffee, computer, action!
You can't go wrong with an introduction. Whether it's introducing you or your brand, take this opportunity to share your WHY with your followers.
Pro-Tips and Tricks. Also called "hacks", bring your audience value by sharing your knowledge of your industry in a fun way.
How-To's and Tutorials. Use your Reel to educate in a fun way -- the process of a quick recipe, the breakdown of an art & craft, anything that is informative with a clear outline will do.
"Three Ways to …". Think 3 ways to do "something", or 3 ways your business can help, or 3 results your clients have received. It's a simple, efficient way to streamline content and offer insight.
The Who (your audience and how they can find you!)
Something to think about, even in Instagram Reels -- HASHTAGS! Remember, hashtags are how people can find your content and how the algorithm knows how to recommend it to others. This includes Reels 100 percent. Should you use them? Absolutely. But why? Reels take a lot of space on hashtag pages, which means that your video will catch people's attention first. Also, your video will stay on top of the Hashtag page for a few days after you've posted, so you'll generate more reach.
Create your hashtags based on what your brand is about, what your Reel is about, and what your ideal client/buyer is checking out on Instagram. Add the hashtags when you create your caption.
Now! Brands and creators are learning that these quick videos literally "reel" in engagement and followers. Instagram wants quality Reels to be seen, so the sooner you get your video ready and posted, the better. Seriously, Instagram reports that "people tell us they want to see entertaining, funny and interesting content in places like the Reels tab, and we've gotten better at recommending that."
So follow their suggestion, stay true to your brand and create!
